About First Mt Sinai Missionary Baptist Church

Our Church History

First Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church has been a cornerstone in the Savannah community for many years. Founded on April 25, 1952 our church has a rich history of serving and inspiring our members and the wider community. It all started , at the home of Reverend C. E. Young. Sixty-one members of Union Branch Baptist Church separated themselves to form First Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church. The first worship service was held at the Masonic Temple (519 W Gwinnett Street- Savannah, GA 31401). Services were then relocated to the Store Front Building located on West Broad & Waldburg St, Savannah, GA 31401. Worship services continued at that location from 1952-1956.  In 1956, Deacons and members of First Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church purchased a church on the corner of 32nd and Burroughs Street. They were without a Pastor but were under the direction of Rev. Smith Stevens. The Lord heard their cry  and answered their prayers. On July 26, 1960, the Rev. Leroy Samuel Aiken, Jr. was called as pastor. The church was renovated on November 27, 1964. This structure is currently named the L.S. Aiken Christian Educational Building. The groundbreaking ceremony for the current sanctuary was January 30, 1983 and construction of the current edifice began February 21, 1983. On October 30, 1983 the dedication service was held. God was still showing favor upon his people on December 5, 1993, under the leadership of Glasper Nero, as the church was blessed by having a mortgage burning ceremony. In 2002, under the leadership of Pastor Shannon O’Neil Smith Sr., First Mount Sinai became incorporated. First Mount Sinai acquired property in the rear of our Sanctuary in January 2005 . We currently own majority of the entire block. Renovation of the Sanctuary began on January 2, 2018 and was favored by God to have the renovations completed on January 21st of the same year.  In celebration we had a Rededication of the Sanctuary Ceremony. With humble hearts we thank God for our rich church history. He continues to give vision to our Pastor and empower his people that we may win souls for Christ. Our commitment to sharing the love of Christ has led us to establish a variety of programs and initiatives that promote spiritual growth, community involvement, and social justice. We welcome all who seek to connect with their faith and join us in this mission.
